On a typical day, by the time the sun begins its rise over Blackhawk and the rest of the San Ramon Valley, Jou Jou Chawla has already been engaged in her daily routine for more than an hour. It’s a routine that has contributed to her success as one of our area’s top producing Realtors for over three decades now. Without fail, the first thing Jou Jou does every day is to check her email followed by her daily yoga practice, before launching into the rest of what the day brings. A lot of what the day brings is outlined on lists. Jou Jou laughs as she says, “I run my business on checklists. I have a checklist for everything!”
Of course, her routine and her checklists have evolved over the years. When Jou Jou first started real estate in 1982, email and the Internet didn’t even exist as tools of business. But that’s been the story of Jou Jou’s career and the key to her success…adapting and evolving with the latest technology while never wandering from the basic practices and strategies that form the base of any successful business.
Jou Jou says her business is based primarily on two things: providing personalized service and quality communication. “Today, there’s no excuse for a lack of communication. Clients know, they send you an email and it’s delivered right to my hand. My client can always reach me. I’m available 24/7, and it doesn’t matter if that client is involved in a $100,000 or $10 million transaction. Both types of transactions are equally important to me.” It’s more than just picking up the phone or returning an email that matters. It’s having answers. Even though Jou Jou has a Transaction Coordinator, she knows each aspect of every transaction with which she’s involved. There’s no“App” for that. It simply takes a lot of hard work, so even though her typical day starts before the sun is up, it often doesn’t end until the wee hours of the morning either.
Jou Jou is supported by her talented team of real estate experts who take care of the details so her transactions can run smoothly from start to finish. Jamey Tak & Pat McGrath work day-to-day with Jou Jou as sales associates while Charlotte Gott manages her back office. DeAnna Martin has just joined the team and will be balancing her time in both sales and transaction coordination. Jou Jou also credits her family for her success and says their support has been the foundation on which everything else has been built.
Jou Jou was born in New Delhi, India and met her husband, Piri, after earning a degree in Economics from New Delhi University. They were introduced to each other in the traditional “match-making” custom and became engaged within 14 hours. She joined Piri in the United States in 1980 and after a few years in New York and Texas, moved to Blackhawk in 1985. She then joined Blackhawk Realty where her dedication and hard work set the tone for what would set her apart from other agents.
Over the years, Jou Jou has earned numerous professional and production achievements and has done close to half a billion dollars in sales since starting her career. Jou Jou is in the Top 1% of J.Rockcliff Realtors; she is the 4th highest producing agent in a company with more than 600 realtors. Both Piri, and their son, Vik assist Jou Jou in her business and are incredible assets to her, through the experience and perspective they bring from their own vocations. Piri retired as the CFO for Xerox International Partners in Palo Alto and is now the head of his own investment advisory firm, Chawla Investment Advisors. Vik has just finished his analyst program at The Blackstone Group, an alternative asset management and financial services company, and is now preparing for his next role in the hedge fund space.
Jou Jou says her son, Vik, keeps her up to date on the latest technological tools for business and tells the story of one transaction she completed, sitting in the office of another agent. Using the apps, text and email available on her iPhone, she was able to negotiate and deliver a signed, completed offer on a highly sought home for her client in under 15 minutes…deal done. It’s that combination of personalized service, showing up in person, and use of the latest technology that place Jou Jou’s clients at a competitive advantage in today’s market.
However, Jou Jou will be the first to tell you the most important advantage her clients enjoy is her years of extensive experience. As she puts it, “you can’t buy my knowledge on the internet. You need the tech combined with the experience in this business that only comes with gray hairs.”
